The Role: 

We are seeking a Developer Experience Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for enhancing the productivity and efficiency of our product engineers by improving our development processes, internal tools, and infrastructure. Your work will have a direct impact on the speed and quality of the product we build, allowing our developers to focus on shipping code rather than navigating friction points

As a Series A startup, we need someone who can thrive in a fast-paced environment, wear many hats, and take ownership of critical internal initiatives. You will be part of the engineering team, but your focus will be improving the experience of our developers by optimizing workflows, tooling, and developer environments.

Responsibilities

Internal Tooling: Own and improve our internal tools. Extend the capabilities to support impersonalization for debugging purposes.

Framework Ownership: Take ownership of our custom API framework (built on Next.js). Either enhance and maintain it, or help evaluate and potentially migrate away from it if necessary.

Monorepo Setup & Management: Optimize and maintain our Nx monorepo setup, including creating custom generators, ensuring proper linting (e.g., ESLint), and maintaining a clean development environment.

Database Management: Improve local database setup and seeding mechanisms to streamline testing and debugging.

Backend Logging: Enhance our backend logging system to make debugging easier and error resolution faster.

Admin Panel (React): Refactor and improve our React Admin panel to ensure it is maintainable, visually appealing, and easy to extend.

Database Flow: Improve our Postgres database flow, ensuring migrations, backups, and optimizations are handled smoothly.

Next.js Migration: Lead the migration from the pages directory to the app directory within our Next.js application.

Dependency Management (Renovate): Oversee the ownership and automation of dependency updates using tools like Renovate to ensure the codebase stays up to date.

Code Quality: Improve our TypeScript setup, naming conventions, and refactor legacy code to improve maintainability and scalability.

Collaboration with Engineers: Work closely with product engineers to identify pain points and bottlenecks in the development workflow, iterating on solutions that improve their day-to-day work.

What we're looking for: 

Strong Development Skills: Proficiency with TypeScript, JavaScript (React, Next.js), and experience working with backend services (Node.js, Postgres and AWS).

Monorepo Experience: Familiarity with Nx (or other monorepo tools) and ability to optimize and maintain monorepos.

Tooling & CI/CD: Experience in setting up or optimizing internal tools, CI/CD pipelines, and developer workflows.

Database Experience: Strong understanding of relational databases (e.g., Postgres), including local development environments, migrations, and database flow optimization.

DevOps Mindset: Familiarity with logging, monitoring, and debugging tools to improve backend observability and developer productivity.

Front-End Experience: Comfortable working with React, able to refactor or rebuild admin interfaces.

Ownership Mentality: Ability to take ownership of projects and see them through, from conceptualization to completion.

Problem-Solving: Capable of independently identifying inefficiencies in the development process and proposing concrete solutions.

Bonus points if you have: 

Experience with custom API frameworks or server-side rendering frameworks like Next.js.

Knowledge of backend systems and familiarity with debugging/logging tools.

Prior experience in developer tooling, developer experience, or platform engineering.

Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automating routine tasks (e.g., dependency management via Renovate or similar tools).

Enhanced Developer Productivity: Engineers are able to ship features faster with fewer bottlenecks.

Streamlined Tooling: Internal tools are optimized and new ones are created as needed to simplify debugging, testing, and development.

Stable and Scalable Codebase: The codebase follows best practices, is maintainable, and can scale with the team.

Improved Code Quality: TypeScript usage is standardized, and naming conventions and structure are improved, making code easier to navigate.

Reduced Technical Debt: Legacy code is refactored, and future updates are smoother thanks to consistent maintenance and improvements.
